Former Clerk Of U.P. Dies at Salt Lake Home
Ernest L. Smith, 55, former chief clerk of the Salt Lake branch of the Union Pacific system and prominent in railroad work for 40 years, died yesterday at his home 902 East Second South street, of acute myocarditis.
Serving for several years under H.J. Plumhoff of the Union Pacific system, Mr. Smith retired from active duty in 1928. His railroad career began in 1897 when he became a secretary to officials of the Denver and Rio Grande Western railroad. In 1900 he joined the Oregon Short Line railroad as secretary to the general superintendent, E.E. Calvin, later becoming connected with his last company as secretary to the branch manager W.H. Bancroft.
Mr. Smith was born in Salt Lake City, April 10, 1880, a son of Charles F. And Mary Smith, and was educated in the old St. Mark's school. At the time of his death he was a member of Argenta lodge No. 3 F. And A.M., and the Utah consistory No. 1.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Helen Elaine Smith; two sons, E. Linwood and Miles Murray Smith; a daughter, Helen Elaine Smith; a sister, Mrs. Agnes R. Evans, and a brother, Charles F. Smith, all of Salt Lake City.
